Everlane: sales tax?

This post contains referral links.

So… I was planning on ordering more Everlane stuff to try but as my mouse hovered over the enthusiastic “Place Order!” button, I suddenly thought to change the address to the Michigan address of the apartment that’s waiting for me once graduate school starts in August. And lo and behold, no sales tax!

Everlane is a San Francisco-based company so since I live in the same state, I was charged a 8.75% sales tax everytime I placed an order. For the current combination of clothing in my “Shopping Bag,” that’s about a $10 sales tax on top of my 100+ order. I’m currently unemployed and would prefer not paying extra if I had to. Michigan does have a sales tax (albeit a much lower one), but since it’s not California, Everlane isn’t required to charge a sales tax.

This may seem like an obvious thing, but I really had no idea that people outside of California are likely not being charged the state sales tax. While I can’t find any online stories/evidence to prove this, it makes sense. I’m not going to start adding a bunch of addresses in random states to test this, but if anyone who lives outside California but in the US (Canadian customers have to pay taxes and other things I don’t understand) can corroborate my “findings,” please let me know 😉

It certainly not a huge deal since I’ve been paying sales tax on everything from anywhere as long as can remember (except for those golden Amazon days), but it was just an interesting thing to note.

I’ll probably hold off on purchasing some of the pricier items (silk shirt) until after moving to Michigan, but in the mean time, I will likely place an order for two shirts just to see what they’re like. I’m super curious about the v-necks since so many people love them, and I also want to try the men’s cotton crew. I’ll keep you updated.

This is not a sponsored post (and I have no idea why you could think it is lol), and if you’d like to make an Everlane purchase and would like to use my referral code, please click here. I get a $15 credit when you make your first purchase. As always, it would be much appreciated. 🙂

I really want a leather tote bag. Like in a cognac-y or dark chocolate brown leather but how can I say no to olive green…

Not sure which one I’ll eventually (and by eventually, I mean waaay in the future) buy, but here’s a compilation of “reasonably priced” (maximum of $300) totes that have caught my eye.

Things I want

Now that my graduate school interviews are over, I have a shit load of newfound free time and I pretty much spend all day just browsing for things I want.

Been drooling over these earrings and I’m waiting for a promotion or free shipping deal before I take the plunge. Mainly because I HATE paying for shipping.  All the earrings I currently have or have been given are classic gold, silver or black and they’re great for everyday wear and work with any outfit. So I’m hoping these will be my pretty/formal/colorful earrings that I wear for special occasions.

I’M SO PURRTYYYY. click the photo for the link

I’m still trying to take out my labret studs from my 5-month-old-but-healed lobe piercings. I started really trying to get them out three days ago and it’s an ongoing process. But once I get these labret studs out, the earring extravaganza is on.

Pics: Longchamp Planetes Large Tote

Sorry for the shitty iPhone photos; currently at home and my dad has a DSLR but as Tammy can confirm, I have no idea how to use one. And I don’t know why other people’s iPhone photos are always so clear. Maybe my hands shake too much? Or maybe my phone obscures a lot of the light from entering the lens? I have no idea. It’s kind of sad.

But my baby is finally here! Here’s my previous post explaining my thought process for buying this bag.

My day shopping with a J. Crew employee

Title pretty much sums it up. My friend came up to visit so we met up in SF at the mall (I just made myself giggle- thanks a lot HIMYM). She’s currently working at a J. Crew Factory while looking for a non-retail job and today, I got to experience some of her employee perks.

Our first stop was Madewell. Because they’re sister companies, my friend’s 30% employee discount applied to almost everything in the store. When we walked in, she had to announce herself to the management of the store and they gave her a list (three pages long!) of the items that employees had special/additional discounts on (e.g. items that are 60% off list price) but I don’t think these discounted items can get an additional 30% employee discount, but no one’s complaining. There was also a list of exclusions (fairly short compared to the special discount one) where even her 30% off discount didn’t apply (e.g. leather leggings). And anything not on the special price or exclusion list was eligible for 30% off (including sale items, stackable with any sale promotions).

Needless to say, I went a little crazy. I didn’t get too crazy, but I did end up buying more stuff than my friend (lol). I ended up with a skirt that I’m not sure where I’ll wear, but it’s emerald green and fit amazingly so I couldn’t resist. I also managed to pick up a denim shirt I’ve been eying for months. Together, they make a new outfit so yay? Also, I really want this Penfield shirt (to go with my beloved kasson).

I also got a pair of Happy Socks (for boots). Altogether, I spent (aka friend bought, I paid her back) about $60 including tax (skirt- $30, shirt- $20, socks- $5). And wow, I never want to shop at Madewell without my friend ever ever again.

At J. Crew, instead of a paper list, she was handed an iPad with a case that had a handle with the list on it. I don’t even know. I didn’t look at this list because I didn’t really want to buy anymore stuff, but I found a flannel button up that I wanted and it was on the list! However, it was still a bit pricey (since J. Crew tends to be marked up more than Madewell, the discounted items weren’t as “cheap”) so I decided to wait until it hits the sale rack. Crazy stuff… almost makes me want to work at J. Crew or Madewell, but my friend’s working Black Friday and she has to do night shifts and fold clothes until the wee hours of the night when there’re new clothes, so I’ll pass for now. But it was super cool and nice of her to let me get to use her discount(s)!

On another note, holy crap there are so many things I want from Old Navy right now. Tammy got a peacoat last time we went to SF and I liked it so much that I later also bought one online (we both got it in S). I went to try some of items I’ve been wanting and my goodness, I need to get a job. The pretty things: infinity scarf (Tammy got one of these too and it’s oh so soft), honeycomb-knit sweater (I want all the colors; S for normal fit or M for an oversized fit), blanket coat (XS was the way to go with this one) and flannel shirt. I also need a new pair of flannel pajama pants (mine are 2+ years old and have holes in awkward places). I want all the things in all the colors.

Collage: Winter Wools

This collage made my wrists cry but makes my brain so happy:

1 coat ; 2 cardigan ; 3 jacket ; 4 mini skirt ; 5 dress (on sale!);
6 sweater ; 7 long skirt ; 8 cardigan ; 9 skimmer pant (on sale!)
click on the collage for a bigger and more detailed view

I tried to find a variety of affordable (especially once they go on sale) items that contained around 40% or more wool that would be great for winter. So I pretty much wanted to include every single coat and jacket from Zara, but made myself only pick one. I hope my restraint was worth it. I sadly own none of these items, but absolutely adore every single piece (especially that coat and mini skirt). Happy shopping!
